Psychologist – Empower Pain Management Program

An opportunity has become available for a clinical psychologist, psychologist to join our multidisciplinary pain management team at Northern Pain Centre.  The opportunity is for work both in Empower Pain Management Program, and in one-on-one consultations in our rooms.

The Empower Pain Management Program is Northern Pain Centre’s intensive 3-week pain management program.  Empower aims to teach participants the principles of active self-management to assist them with both managing their pain and optimising their quality of life.

Our program is based on the latest clinical research and evidence-based techniques in chronic pain management.  You would be joining our highly experienced pain management team which includes Empower’s Medical Director, Dr Martine Holford, our physiotherapists and practice nurses.

The successful candidate would:

  • Provide individual preliminary consultations for all potential participants
  • Facilitate the group-based education sessions on a variety of psychology topics grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, with both didactic and interactive components
  • Write end of program reports for all enrolled participants
  • Facilitate the post-program Interdisciplinary Case Conference
  • Have the option to consult more generally as a pain psychologist in our rooms

We are seeking someone who has current registration with APHRA as a clinical psychologist (or is close to being certified) or psychologist, and who practises evidence-based treatment.  Experience in the management of patients with chronic pain and mood disorder is highly valuable, as is experience in facilitating group therapy sessions.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is required.  Demonstrated clinical knowledge, skill and clinical experience in the provision of psychological therapy for patients with chronic pain is desired.

The Empower Pain Management Program operates on a bi-monthly basis in the North Sydney area, outside of school holidays.  We offer flexibility in sessions times and days within the program dates, to suit individual needs.

There is also the opportunity to work alongside our team of psychologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists and pain management specialists, as a consultant clinical psychologist. Multidisciplinary treatment and transition to active self-management is the evidence-based approach upon which we base our management.  The role for specialised psychology input is of primary importance for optimal outcome.  Our practice attracts a wide variety of clinical presentations relating to chronic pain, such as mood disorders and issues related to trauma and adjustment.  Patients typically fall within the age range 19-70 years.

Northern Pain Centre offers full receptionist and office support including appointments, billing, debt collection, and clinical records management as part of the sessional room use arrangement, along with access to a healthy stream of incoming referrals.

Northern Pain Centre is located in North Shore Private, St Leonards and Bella Vista. The office is open from Monday to Friday, business hours.

Registered Nurse, Empower Pain Management Program Coordinator – Maternity Leave

Empower Pain Management Program (EPMP) is an education program for patients with chronic pain.  Our program teaches patients how to manage pain and optimise quality of life.  Designed for Worker’s Compensation patients, EPMP aims to assist patients to return to work.

The program is an adjunct therapy for patients of the Northern Pain Centre.  Participants in the program are referred to it by the Northern Pain Centre doctors who specialise in pain management.

EPMP is a non-residential 3-week program that runs bi-monthly.  The program only runs during the NSW school term.   We are located in Sydney, on the Lower North Shore.

As the EPMP Program coordinator you will be the person who will educates, enrols and supports patients entering into the program.  You will liaise with the patient’s workers’ compensation insurer and secure the insurer’s approval for payment of the program.  You will be responsible for liaising with the multidisciplinary team which facilitate the program and report to the Medical Director, Dr Martine Holford.

While the 3-week program is running you will be required to assist in the class room.  Your duties will include coordinating catering, transportation and the logistics for the program.  You will also be responsible for trouble-shooting issues, setting up and packing away the class room.  You will be responsible for monitoring stationary and catering supplies.    You will work ‘back stage’ on a laptop computer and be on hand to assist the Facilitators and Medical Director.  You will be required at 8am, Monday to Friday.  Your day will finish at 4pm.  You will have an hour break for lunch.

In the periods between programs, you will work for EPMP from the rooms of Northern Pain Centre in St Leonards.  You will be working alongside the Northern Pain Centre administration team who provide clerical assistance to a multidisciplinary team of doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and physiotherapist.

To perform well in this role, you will need to be self-directed and capable of working independently.  Experience in managing a group and patient education is highly valued.  You will have excellent time management skills, be well organised and manage data.  You will require proficiency on Mac computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, Zoom and PowerPoint.  Experience using Genie Solutions medical software is considered a distinct advantage.  You will have a friendly and compassionate customer service style, and be highly motivated to learn.

Your wages will be commensurate with your experience.  Start January 2022.

Administration Assistant – Empower Pain Management Program
