Dr Aidan McParland

Dr Aidan McParland is an Interventional Pain Medicine Specialist consulting at Northern Pain Centre. He specialises in interventional approaches to acute and chronic pain as part of a multidisciplinary model, with the goal of reducing pain and improving function and quality of life. Dr McParland completed separate honours undergraduate and master’s degrees focused on the neurobiology of chronic pain. He went on to pursue medical training at the University of Toronto and Fellowship training at the University of British Columbia. He undertook subspecialty Pain Medicine Fellowship training through the Faculty of Pain Medicine (ANZCA) at Royal North Shore Hospital and Hunter Pain Specialists, with advanced training in interventional techniques, regenerative medicine, and neuromodulation. He is currently completing further post-graduate specialty studies in neuromodulation at Queen Mary University of London.
He has a particular interest in the treatment of:
● Spinal pain
● Neuropathic pain
● Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
● Post-surgical pain
● Musculoskeletal pain syndromes
Dr McParland’s over fifteen years of research work in pain has focused on understanding neurogenetic mechanisms of central sensitisation, novel pain therapies, biomedical device design, and innovation. He has authored over twenty peer-reviewed publications in journals including The British Medical Journal, Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Medicine, Molecular Pain, and Journal of Neuroscience, and is a contributing author to Bonica’s Management of Pain (6th Edition). He maintains an academic staff specialist appointment at Royal North Shore Hospital. Outside of pain medicine, Dr McParland works with Surfing Medicine International and the Olympic Surf Committee on concussion and return-to-play protocols.
