Genicular Nerve Block

This technique applies local anaesthetic to the network of nerves that supply sensation to the knee joint.  Three small injections around the knee are made under x-ray guidance to temporarily halt the flow of pain signals from the knee to the brain.  If you experience substantial relief of knee pain during the period of local anaesthetic effect, you and your doctor may consider the option of providing a further treatment to the genicular nerves (see genicular neurotomy) for longer-lasting pain relief.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Northern Pain Centre can facilitate you obtaining a second opinion. Please discuss this with us.
