Psychologist for Empower

An opportunity has become available for a psychologist to join our multidisciplinary pain management program at Northern Pain Centre.

The Empower Pain Management Program is Northern Pain Centre’s intensive 3-week pain management program.  Empower aims to teach participants the principles of active self-management to assist them with both managing their pain and optimising their quality of life.

Our program is based on the latest clinical research and evidence-based techniques in chronic pain management.  You would be joining our highly experienced pain management team which includes Empower’s Medical Director, Dr Martine Holford, our physiotherapists and practice nurses.

The successful candidate would:

  • Provide individual preliminary consultations for all potential participants
  • Facilitate the group-based education sessions on a variety of psychology topics grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, with both didactic and interactive components
  • Write end of program reports for all enrolled participants
  • Facilitate the post-program Interdisciplinary Case Conference
  • Have the option to consult more generally as a pain psychologist in our rooms

We are seeking someone who has current registration with APHRA as a clinical psychologist (or is close to being certified) and who practises evidence-based treatment.  Experience in the management of patients with chronic pain and mood disorder is highly valuable, as is experience in facilitating group therapy sessions.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing is required.  Demonstrated clinical knowledge, skill and clinical experience in the provision of clinical psychology interventions for patients with chronic pain is desired.

The Empower Pain Management Program operates on a bi-monthly basis in the North Sydney area, outside of school holidays.  We offer flexibility in sessions times and days within the program dates, to suit individual needs.

There is also the opportunity to work alongside our team of psychologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists and pain management specialists, as a consultant clinical psychologist. Multidisciplinary treatment and transition to active self-management is the evidence-based approach upon which we base our management.  The role for specialised psychology input is of primary importance for optimal outcome.  Our practice attracts a wide variety of clinical presentations relating to chronic pain, such as mood disorders and issues related to trauma and adjustment.  Patients typically fall within the age range 19-70 years.

Northern Pain Centre offers full receptionist and office support including appointments, billing, debt collection, and clinical records management as part of the sessional room use arrangement, along with access to a healthy stream of incoming referrals.

Northern Pain Centre is located in North Shore Private, St Leonards and Bella Vista. The office is open from Monday to Friday, business hours.
